CLEAN START WORKS WITH WOMEN AND CHILDREN IMPACTED BY THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, TO RESTORE DIGNITY AND HOPE, FOR SUCCESSFUL REINTEGRATION. WE WORK TO ADDRESS REINTEGRATION AT EVERY LEVEL.

OUR APPROACH

Our activities are all geared towards bridging the gap between prison and the community.
We facilitate the successful transition and reintegration for women and children leaving prison.

1. UFUNUO PROGRAMME

Ufunuo is Kiswahili for “unveiling.” The Clean Start Ufunuo programme has the goal:
To improve the livelihood of 600 formerly incarcerated women in 5 counties, by 2023.

The objectives are:

1. To enhance self-determination, resilience, and coping pathways for 600 formerly imprisoned women by 2023 in 5 counties.
2. To improve household income for 600 Formerly Imprisoned Women through small business management skills training in 5 counties by 2023.

We have endeavoured to achieve lasting impact in the community of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women. In the last 5 years, Clean Start is proud to have accomplished the following.

2. WOMEN IN PRISON

3,439 Incarcerated Women supported

Our work begins inside prison, in the last 5 years, with our friends and partners, our outreach programmes have provided 3,439 incarcerated women with spiritual and emotional care, mentorship from formerly incarcerated women, dignity packs and life skills training. These have improved the mental well-being, dignity, respect and self esteem of incarcerated women.

3. OUR CIRCLES OF HEALING.

We believe everyone needs a second chance, that’s why we are committed to provide a safe space that allows formerly imprisoned women to build their self –drive, determination, resilience, confidence and self - esteem.

108 women reached

Currently, we have 9 Circles of Healing for formerly incarcerated women. Our Circles of Healing have provided safe, peer-led spaces for 108 women to achieve self-reconciliation, psycho-social support and trauma-healing. The Circles of Healing have allowed women to build their self- drive, determination, resilience, confidence and self-esteem, achieved collectively.

4. TABLES OF SUPPORT

500 formerly incarcerated women reached

In the last 5 years, our primary focus has been reintegration of formerly incarcerated women. We have facilitated over 500 formerly incarcerated women with life-skills, entrepreneurship/trade/craft training, linkage to business and employment opportunities. These have provided the women with access to economic opportunities. Every woman has been supported with a minimum of $150 as small business start-up support.

5. CHILDREN OF IMPRISONED MOTHERS

605 Children living with their mothers in prison supported

We believe in a responsive care system that ensures a child living in prison with the motherIs in a safe and inspiring environment, attains independence, creativity, self-esteem and problem-solving skills. Through our friends and partners Clean Start has provided consumables such as diapers, food supplements, baby clothes and bedding. Clean Start has constructed a children’s kitchen in Nyeri prison and face- lifted the mothers’ and children’s ward at Machakos Women’ s prison, to ensure improved food- preparation conditions and an environment that inspires the child living in prison.

SYSTEMIC CHANGE.

We share our expertise with the Government to shape legislation, court processes and to support reintegration.

400 Prison and children’s Officers reached

Our training has equipped 400 prison and children officers with the skills and concepts to change mindsets, attitudes and practices which uphold dignity of women and children within the criminal justice system. This has honed an improved rehabilitative culture within the 5 prisons.
